CMC and OhioHealth present: Our Healthy Community

No one should live in Denial, Ohio. That's the message the Ohio Opioid Education Alliance (OOEA) is trying to get across in a multi-million dollar advertising campaign that will run through 2019. The OOEA is a public-private partnership made up of 14 corporations, non-profit organizations, and government bodies who are dedicated to tackling the opioid crisis facing Ohio.

The common frustration among Ohioans is that something must be done about the opioid epidemic, but what? With drug overdose deaths in Franklin County rising 47% in 2017 over 2016, Central Ohio is feeling the pressure.

CMC will host a panel discussion focusing on where Ohio currently stands in its fight against opioid addiction and what hope is on the horizon, featuring Chad Jester, president of the Nationwide Foundation, one of the founding organizations of the OOEA, and front-line advocates Shawn Holt, President & CEO of Maryhaven Inc., David Royer, CEO of the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board of Franklin County (ADAMH), and Columbus Firefighter Tiffanie Paige.

Automation has been a driving force in the global economy for decades now, but the rapidity with which new artificial intelligence technology is progressing is almost mind-boggling. The question for workers is no longer "will my job still exist?" but "will my industry still exist?" Billions of lives will be affected in the coming years but few people have any answers.

CMC welcomes renowned political scientist, author, and Vice President and Director of Governance Studies at the Brookings Institute,  Darrell M. West, to discuss his latest book, The Future of Work: Robots, AI, and Automation. Lewis “Lou” Von Thaer was named the President and CEO of Battelle in October 2017, only the ninth CEO in the company's 88-year history.

In 1923, industrialist Gordon Battelle provided for the creation of the Battelle Memorial Institute "for the purpose of education in connection with and the encouragement of creative and research work and the making of discoveries and inventions." Battelle has pioneered numerous technological advancements, from the processing of uranium for the Manhattan project to extensive patents for xerography, UPC, and compact discs.

As the leader of one of Columbus' biggest and most storied businesses, we look forward to hearing about Von Thaer's views on Battelle's unique history and where it's headed in the future. Von Thaer will be interviewed by Frederic Bertley, Ph.D., President and CEO of COSI.

Von Thaer spent 30 years with AT&T Bell Laboratories and its eventual owner, General Dynamics, before joining Leidos, Inc. as president of its National Security Sector and then DynCorp as CEO.
