Stephen E. Markovich, MD is President and CEO of OhioHealth, Central Ohio’s largest health system with 12 hospitals and more than 400 ambulatory sites providing a full scope of healthcare services across 47 of Ohio’s 88 counties.  In addition to his role as a healthcare executive, he is a physician and retired military leader.

Prior to his role as President and CEO, Dr. Markovich practiced family and emergency medicine, was a leader in OhioHealth’s Family Practice Residency Program and served as president of OhioHealth Riverside Hospital – the largest hospital in OhioHealth’s system.  He has held a variety of administrative roles, most recently serving as OhioHealth’s Executive Vice President with responsibility for acute care operations during his transition to CEO.

In addition to his career in medicine, Dr. Markovich has a laudable military career. He retired as a Major General from the US Air Force after 38 years of service, most recently serving as the Commander of the Ohio Air National Guard. Prior to his senior leadership roles, Dr. Markovich logged more than 2,000 flying hours as a fighter pilot, completed three overseas deployments to the Middle East as both a pilot and a physician, and he led the development of the nation’s first chemical and biological response task force that responds to medical disasters in the State of Ohio.

Dr. Markovich is also a teacher, author and national speaker. He currently serves on The Columbus Partnership, The Columbus Downtown Development Commission, the Board of the National Veteran’s Memorial Museum, the Columbus Symphony, the Central Ohio Hospital Council, and the Ohio Hospital Association.  He previously served on the Board of Jobs Ohio, the United Way, and the Boy Scouts of Central Ohio.  He is recognized as one of Columbus’ most influential leaders by Columbus Business First.

Dr. Markovich earned an undergraduate degree in engineering from the University of Michigan, a Master of Business Administration from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and his Doctor of Medicine from The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
