Ty Marsh

Executive Director, Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO)

The SWACO Board of Trustees hired Ty Marsh as executive director in December of 2013. Since then, Marsh has restored trust in the authority by shoring up its finances, rebuilding its relationships with community partners and restoring public accountability.

As executive director, Marsh has overseen and led SWACO’s operations through a transformational and strategic process, resulting in an enhanced focus on the authority’s public mission, service to customers, and operational efficiency and effectiveness. Under Marsh’s leadership, SWACO has reduced administrative costs, and expanded community diversion programming while reducing the costs to safely dispose of waste at the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill.

Marsh’s professional experience includes more than 25 years of high-level governmental, private sector and civic leadership. During this time, he has built a reputation as a team-oriented, trustworthy leader who has demonstrated strength in achieving bottom-line results through effective and collaborative management skills. He has an extensive network of relationships with senior executives and elected officials throughout the Columbus Region in business, government, philanthropic, nonprofit and academic communities.

Before joining SWACO, Marsh was principle of Ty Marsh Associates, a consulting firm founded by Marsh in 2011 to provide strategic advice, connections and results to public, private and nonprofit clients. Through his role with Ty Marsh Associates, Marsh served as chair of the planning committee for Columbus200, which organized Columbus’ bicentennial celebration in 2012.

From 2003 to 2010, Marsh was president and CEO of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, which at the time led and supported all economic development in the Columbus region. The Columbus Chamber was transformed during Marsh’s leadership into a vibrant, effective and financially stable organization. Marsh also served the Columbus Chamber from 1991 to 1999 as vice president, senior vice president and executive vice president.

Marsh served as Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s first chief of staff from 2000 to 2003, providing guidance to the mayor and leadership to the administration’s 13-member cabinet and 16-member staff. Under his leadership, Columbus spent fewer dollars in 2002 compared to 2001 and yet achieved the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

Marsh served in the Ohio General Assembly as chief of staff for Ohio House Speaker Vern Riffe, and as Ohio House legislative clerk. Additionally, Marsh served as staff director for a U.S. Congressional Small Business Committee subcommittee.
