Senate President Pro Tempore, 31st District, Ohio Senate

Senator Jay Hottinger represents the people of Ohio’s 31st Senate District, which includes all of Licking, Perry, Coshocton and Tuscarawas Counties and part of Holmes County. Jay has served as a public official since the age of 21, serving in capacities as a Newark city councilman, a state representative and a state senator.

In addition to his public service, Jay is also vice president of sales for Truck One, Inc., a Newark-based trucking company. It is his business experience and understanding of his community that Jay brings with him to the Statehouse, where he has worked tirelessly on issues important to his constituents. He has voted to reduce or eliminate billions of dollars of taxes and has advocated for other policies that grow business and help Ohioans compete in the workforce.

A leader at the Statehouse, Jay currently serves as the Senate President Pro Tempore, the second-highest ranking member of the Ohio Senate. He is vice chairman of the Senate’s Financial Institutions & Technology Committee, as well as the Rules & Reference Committee. He also serves on the Finance Committee, the Insurance Committee and the Ways & Means Committee. In addition to serving on these Senate standing committees, he also serves on the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee, the Legislative Service Commission, the Capital Square Review & Advisory Board, the Ohio Retirement Study Council and the Ohio Public Employees Deferred Compensation Board.

Jay is a lifelong resident of Newark. He is a 1988 graduate of Newark High School and a 1992 graduate of Capital University, where he graduated summa cum laude in political science and public administration.

He and his wife, Cheri, reside in Newark and are the proud parents of three daughters: Savannah, Heather, and Jayme. The Hottingers are active members of their church as well as a number of civic organizations.
