John J. Warner, MD, became chief executive officer of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and executive vice president at Ohio State in April 2023. One of the nation’s foremost leaders in academic medicine, Dr. Warner is advancing Ohio State’s vision of health care transformation to meet the needs of the growing communities we serve across Ohio and the nation.

Dr. Warner leads the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center’s research, education and patient care mission across seven hospitals, an expansive and growing network of outpatient care centers, a nationally ranked College of Medicine, more than 20 research institutes, a faculty group practice, an accountable care organization, and a health plan.

Throughout his career, he has focused on improving health care quality, safety and experience by putting patients and their families at the center of decision-making.

A physician-scientist renowned in interventional cardiology, Dr. Warner is committed to developing interdisciplinary approaches to enhance health care delivery, research and learning at the Wexner Medical Center as it completes more than $3 billion in capital building projects to advance its mission.

Before joining Ohio State, Dr. Warner spent 20 years as a cardiologist and leader within the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. In his first leadership role as CEO of University Hospitals and Clinics, he helped oversee the planning and construction of the new William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital. He went on to hold a variety of senior leadership roles, rising to become executive vice president for Health Affairs and ultimately assuming the additional role of CEO of the UT Southwestern Health System where he served until 2023.

Dr. Warner has been a leading voice in national advocacy initiatives to reduce disparities in health care, raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases and improve health care delivery and quality.

He served as president of the American Heart Association (AHA) from 2017-2018 and has been a member of its national board of directors since 2014. He has held leadership roles on numerous association groups focused on research, strategy, innovation and quality improvement. In 2022, he received the Association’s Gold Heart Award, the highest volunteer honor bestowed by the organization.

Dr. Warner earned his medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and was selected chief resident. He completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at the Duke University Medical Center, where he also served on the faculty for three years. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from the Physician Executive MBA program at the University of Tennessee in 2011.
