Mabel Freeman earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at The Ohio State University. She initially taught English at Walnut Ridge High School (Columbus City Schools). Upon returning to the university to complete her graduate work, Freeman was part of the team that established and staffed the University Honors Center as Ohio State moved from open admissions to competitive admissions. Freeman later established the university’s First Year Experience serving for eleven years as the Assistant VP of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience.

Freeman retired from Ohio State University in 2012 and for the past four years has served as a special advisor to the President of Columbus State Community College, with responsibilities for projects regarding access, transition, and success of Central Ohio students into post-secondary educational opportunities.

Freeman has served nationally as an Elected Trustee of The College Board; as the current Vice President of the Mortar Board (college) Senior Honor Society Foundation and former National President of Mortar Board.
