Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, Judge

Judge Richard A. Frye was elected to the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas in November 2004, and re-elected in 2010 and 2016. Before taking the bench he was in private practice in Columbus for over 30 years.

Judge Frye is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and serves on the ACTL Judicial Independence Committee. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and a Life Member of the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference.

Judge Frye chairs the Civil Rules Committee of the Ohio Supreme Court’s Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure, and formerly chaired the Evidence Rules Committee. He is a member of the Ohio Judicial Conference Civil Law and Procedure Committee. For 9 years he was a member of the Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Case Management.

He is an officer of the Columbus Bar Foundation, and as Presiding Judge chairs the Judicial Advisory Board of the Franklin County Community Based Correction Facility [“CBCF”]. Judge Frye chaired the judges committee that oversaw design and construction of the new Franklin County Courthouse which opened in 2011, and is a past president of the Columbus Legal Aid Society.

Judge Frye received the 2013 William K. Thomas Distinguished Jurist Award from Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law alumni society, the 2012 Liberty Bell Award from the Columbus Bar Association, and the 2009 Judge George Tyack Award for judicial excellence from the Central Ohio Assn. for Justice.
