Special Report: New Lesson Plan for Education

This event has ended, but don't worry we have a new forum each week!

New in the Superintendent’s role in 2019, Talisa Dixon came with a strong plan to turn around the system’s failing record. Her plan included bringing more order and consistency to the 116 schools, fair and efficient use of resources, and improving distance learning, among others. It did not include tackling these improvements amid a 100-year pandemic that emptied buildings sending kids home – ready or not. A May 17, Columbus Dispatch Editorial noted: “The exact form that public schooling will take in the next school year isn’t clear yet; even if students return to classrooms, it’s likely to be in a limited format . . . The changes wrought by the coronavirus are as good a starting point as any for system-wide change. The needs – the opportunities — are clearer than ever. We hope the community is ready to respond.”

Just like K-12, higher ed faces its own challenges that have been exacerbated by the health crisis. Dr. Robert Gervasi leads Ohio Dominican University, a 1,600 student Catholic liberal arts institution on the city’s northeastern corner. At the helm since 2017, Gervasi’s extensive and diverse background including his education in classics and ability to speak seven languages.

What’s ahead for K-12 and higher ed as they navigate a new normal?

Featuring Dr. Talisa Dixon, Superintendent, Columbus City Schools and Dr. Robert Gervasi, President, Ohio Dominican University with host Colleen Marshall, Co-Anchor, WCMH NBC4.
