POSTPONED: Buried in Plastic

This event has ended, but don't worry we have a new forum each week!

At one point, plastic seemed like a magic solution for so many problems facing the modern world. It was cheap and easy to mass produce, its disposable nature helped with sanitation measures in the home, offices and doctor’s offices, and for the consumer, it made clean up and storage a breeze because it could just be thrown away when it was no longer needed.

But today, plastic production and consumption is bordering – or perhaps past the point of – irresponsibility. So many household items have turned into single-use disposable commodities, and often people don’t think twice about adding zip-loc baggies, crockpot liners, seran wrap, shampoo bottles, plastic silverware, or a myriad of packaging contraptions to landfills.

Globally, people are starting to look up and realize what all this absent-minded plastic consumption has led to: a worldwide pollution crisis. Plastic is ending up in our oceans, in the water we ingest, and in natural habitats, damaging delicate ecosystems and harming our health.

This forum will discuss the current situation we find our world in, measures being taken and explore to mitigate the extent of the damage, and what we can do to decrease our population’s reliance on plastic over time.

Featuring D. Scott Barbour, President and CEO, Advanced Drainage Systems, Ben Kessler, Mayor of Bexley, and Aparna Dial, Senior Director of Sustainability and Strategic Services, The Ohio State University. Hosted by Ty Marsh, Executive Director SWACO (Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio).
