Who Holds the Keys to Economic Mobility?

This event has ended, but don't worry we have a new forum each week!

As Columbus continues to grow, the stakes have never been higher: how do we ensure that prosperity reaches everyone and that our regional economy is built on dignity, equity, and genuine opportunity? Despite decades of anti-poverty programs, generational poverty remains stubbornly persistent. Why?

What truly moves the needle on economic mobility, eradicating poverty, and building neighborhood prosperity? Where and when do we need grassroots versus systemic solutions? How and when do we need to pair community-driven empowerment with public policy interventions?

Join the Columbus Metropolitan Club for a dynamic conversation that explores what actually works to break cycles of poverty. We’ll examine the strengths and limits of community-driven, faith-based, and mentorship models that transform neighborhoods from within, alongside the role of government-led initiatives and policy interventions. In an era of DEI rollbacks and increasing political polarization, we’ll also confront the question of which pathways to opportunity remain viable for underserved communities—and how leaders across sectors can protect and expand them.

Featuring a dynamic panel of civic and community leaders, we’ll unpack the principles behind neighborhood-led transformation, the systemic reforms that show real impact, the evolving landscape of DEI initiatives, and the practical strategies—both ground-up and top-down—that can drive inclusive growth.

This is a must-attend conversation for business, civic, nonprofit, and philanthropic leaders seeking real, scalable solutions for a more equitable and prosperous Columbus.

Featuring Dr. Joyce J. Chen, Professor of Economics in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, The Ohio State University; Will Crossley, Executive Vice President, The Woodson Center, Washington, D.C.; Stephanie Hightower, President & CEO, The Columbus Urban League and Co-Chair, Equity Now Coalition, with moderator Rodney Dunigan, Evening Manager and Anchor, WSYX ABC6.
